AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zoo will host 35 scheduled events in 2016 and have made sure there is something for everyone. In addition to traditional special events, the zoo has also added several promotional events. The promotional events include fun things to do at the zoo and are free with regular zoo admission.
The zoo will host 11 promotional events including Penguin Palooza on weekends in January that include the option of feeding the zoo’s penguins and Some Like It Cold on weekends in February that focus on zoo animals that don’t mind the cold weather like the snow leopards and red panda. February 14-20 the zoo will celebrate Random Acts of Kindness week and giveaway a prize randomly to a lucky visitor. On March 27, which is Easter, the first 100 people that show up will be given a plastic egg with a prize inside as part of Egg Zooprise. The zoo will be celebrating the last year of its Journey to the Reef exhibit by hosting a Reef Bon Voyage party on November 19.
They zoo will offer several days throughout the year where admission is discounted. On January 18, the zoo will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with free admission. March 21-27 the zoo will offer college students a buy one, get one free admission as part of College ID days. In honor of Canal Park hosting the Eastern League All-Star game the zoo will offering 50% off admission to anyone wearing Akron RubberDucks paraphernalia on July 12 & 13. Moms and Dads will get 50% off admission on their respective holidays and veterans will get free admission in honor of Veterans Day November 5-11. The zoo will host an event on November 12 to celebrate National Teddy Bear Day. Anybody bringing in a teddy bear will get 50% off admission and the zoo’s veterinary staff will be on hand to provide check-ups for teddy bears in the teddy bear clinc.
Back by popular demand are several of the zoo’s special events. These events generally have a separate admission charge and are not during regular zoo hours like Breakfast with the Bunny in March, a photography workshop on April 16, Pancakes with the Penguins on June 18, Boo at the Zoo in October and Snack with Santa in December. The zoo once again will host four Brew at the Zoo events including a 1980’s theme on Thursday, June 9, Christmas is July on Thursday, July 14, a football tailgate party on Saturday, August 27 and a costume party on October 1. New this year the zoo will also be able to serve wine at these events thanks to the passage of Issues 23 & 24 in the November election.
The zoo will host two fundraising events in 2016. On Saturday, January 30, Snow Bowl, which is held at Stonehedge Place in Akron, returns for its 30th year and companies and individuals can bowl to help raise money for the zoo’s animals and programs. On Friday, August 5, the zoo will once again be holding its annual Summer Safari fundraiser. The entire park is open and people can enjoy live music, food from the area’s finest restaurants and raffles and auctions.
Exclusively for Akron Zoo members, the zoo will host three members’ events this summer in the evenings. The dates for these events are Friday, June 24, Thursday, July 21 and Friday, August 19.
