CLEVELAND, OH –The Contemporary Youth Orchestra of Cleveland has been conducting outreach music education workshops in Cleveland, Ohio and Lorain, Ohio as part of a program to educate under-served youth in Northeast Ohio.
The program called Music and its Industry is in its eighth year and has positively affected over 6,000 local area elementary and middle school students since it was founded in 2007. This year, the program revolves around the theme of CYO’s March 15th performance: The Sound of Imagination.
Workshops have occurred and are scheduled for Clara E. Westropp Elementary School and Campus International School in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Lorain City School District is also participating with Longfellow Middle School. Midview Schools in Lorain County will also be participating.
The orchestra has enlisted the knowledge and skills of Cleveland music educators Robin Pease and David Young to conduct the workshops. Each classroom of students engages in a three-day workshop called Brand X where the students create their own companies, brands, and jingles. The educators walk the students through the process and help them produce a professional video to conclude the workshops.
The classrooms also attend a matinee performance of CYO’s show on March 14, 2014. This year’s performance features the music from Disney, Pixar, and Marvel movies including The Lion King, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Frozen and other popular tunes. Over 650 students will attend the performance.
Contemporary Youth Orchestra also performs a longer version of this show in which the general public is invited March 15, 2014 at 7PM at Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University.
The Music and Its Industry program is funded through support from The Nordson Foundation and The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation.
Contemporary Youth Orchestra is also performing a show with popular artist Ben Folds on June 2, 2014 at Severance Hall.
Contemporary Youth Orchestra is the first and only youth orchestra in the country dedicated to the study and performance of contemporary orchestral literature. CYO was founded in 1995, is currently in its 19thseason and is in residence at Cleveland State University. CYO is composed of 115 students from 64 Northeast Ohio school districts.
